Predesign

Building a high-performance building, no matter how small, benefits from an integrated design and construction process. The homeowners hired T.Q. Construction, a well-known local expert in home renovations, early in the design stage. Although T.Q. was more expensive than its competitors and lacked green-building experience, the homeowners felt that the company's willingness to learn, extensive connections with suppliers, and strong relationships with sub-trades would allow the company to control the quality of work and encourage the trades to try something new.

Design

Architectural services were provided by Brantwood Design, a consulting firm that specializes in green homes. Owned and operated by the owners of Hanvey House, Brantwood was involved in the project from beginning to end.

Professionals from Omicron, a large design and construction company experienced in green design, completed the structural, mechanical, and electrical design. When construction began in 2004, the commercial sector in Vancouver was far advanced of the residential sector in green building knowledge and experience. This project gave the Omicron engineers the opportunity to test the transferability of commercial-grade green building strategies (particularly the concept of an integrated design process) in the residential environment.
